How We Shared Content in 2010: Still More Facebook, More Email Than Twitter, MySpace Lives On

The link sharing service AddThis, which said this month that it's now tracking the interests of more than 1 billion people across the web, has published an infographic breaking down the most popular destinations for content shared through its little widget. Sites with an AddThis widget (like ours, above) allow readers to send pages of interest to friends through 300 different methods. What's the most popular way people share?

Facebook. Now more than ever, AddThis reports that Facebook's share of sharing grew from 33% last year to 44%. The company says that email, the second most popular method of sharing through its service, is 38% bigger than sharing on Twitter! And MySpace, though in sharp decline (down 27%), remains very popular. There are of course many different ways to share content, but these numbers from AddThis are quite interesting none the less. If you're not making it easy for website visitors to share your content by email, for example, you're probably making a big mistake.

I have been noticing a lot of IT Administrators and my fellow colleagues not fully utilizing the built-in post-mortem debugger.

In Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, when an application or service crashed, you would either get a Dr. Watson log (drwtsn32.log and user.dmp) or Windows Error Reporting (WER) log.

Since there is no Drwtsn32.exe on Vista/Server 2008/Windows 7/Server 2008 R2, we get to use the W.E.R.

You still receive the same "Event ID 1000" application error in the Application event log as you did with the legacy OS'es.

When an application or service crashes (a.k.a. access violation), there are multiple locations that you should check for a user mode dump (user.dmp)

If the crashing application is User Access Control (UAC) elevated, the dumps will be located at

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive
or
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue depending on whether queue mode is set or not.

If the application is not UAC elevated (LUA), it will be at

C:\Users\UserProfileName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive
Note:  Where UserProfileName is the actual user profile name.
or
C:\Users\UserProfileName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportQueue

The easiest method to look for the user mode memory dumps is to go down to CMD (run as admin) or Powershell
Cd\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\WER\
dir *.*dmp /s

and

C:\Users\
dir *.*dmp /s

Note:  In Windows 7/Server 2008 R2, there has been an improvement on how dumps are collected. If the same application is crashing repeated, Windows 7/Server 2008 R2 optimizes so that it does not collect the dumps for the same type of crash more than once. This behavior is different from Windows Vista /Server 2008 where this was not the case. See http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb513628(VS.85).aspx and check out WER_SUBMIT_BYPASS_DATA_THROTTLING flag which changed the behavior in Windows 7/Server 2008 R2.

What if there are no .hdmp or .mdmp files?
You will want to tweak WER to collect the dmp files.

A Taste of Its Own Medicine? 4chan Down Due to DDoS Attack

4chan, the infamously crude message board, is currently down due to a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack and has been since the early morning hours according to the site's Twitter account. The attack comes just a day after similar attacks slowed down Bank of America's Web services.

4chan founder Moot announced that the site was down at 2:39 a.m. PST, saying "Site is down due to DDoS. We now join the ranks of MasterCard, Visa, PayPal, et al.--an exclusive club!" The site's Twitter account announced the outage in a similarly humorous style:

The 4chan status page lists several parts of the site as being up, but "Boards", "Post images" and "Static files" are all listed as down and the site barely loads after a minute or two. Even this, however, is changing over time with the intensity of the attacks. Geekosystem editor Robert Quigley ponders who could be behind the attack, asking if it could be Tumblr users still hanging on to the Tumblr/4chan battle of earlier this year. Quiqley goes on to wonder if it could be the banks themselves acting in retaliation or even 4chan itself.

It would be a move straight out of a movie to DDoS attack yourself, wouldn't it? What's the best way to prove your own innocence? Make yourself the victim.

We don't have any information on who is behind the attacks, but that would be some high drama right there. The safer bet, though, might be that supporters of the various sites that have been taken down by Anonymous are retaliating. We'll keep an eye out on 4chan's status page for an explanation.
