Blog Post: Now translated to 34 different languages!

Since we migrated to a new platform in May, 2010, there are more options for us as bloggers to customize the readers? experience.  I was making some changes to my blog recently and noticed we now have a translator widget available.  Not sure if this was an option from the start, but I didn?t notice it until a few days ago.

I added the translator widget to all my pages, so almost everyone in the world will have access to these articles in their language.  Just look for the ?Translate This Page? control in the upper-right of every page.  Select the language you want from the drop-down list, then click on the play button to start translating the page to your language.

I think this is a great tool that brings more information to the masses.

Hope you enjoy, and ask your other favorite bloggers to add a translator widget to their pages!

Apple takes on Instapaper, ReadItLater with ?Reading List? for Safari

Apple is working on a feature called “Reading List” for its Safari web browser that will let users save stories to read later — pretty much the same thing that Instapaper and ReadItLater are doing now — reports MacRumors.

At the moment, Reading List only appears to be something that’s in early builds of Mac OS X Lion, Apple’s next operating system — but I would wager that it will also be something that’s implemented (and synchronized) on the iPhone and iPad.

If that’s the case, then the feature spells trouble for Instapaper and ReadItLater, both of which have gathered millions of users thanks to their synchronized bookmarking implementations. Instapaper developer Marco Arment doesn’t seem too worried though, saying on Twitter, “For many reasons, I believe Instapaper would still have a market even if Apple implemented Reading List synced to iOS devices.” He also said that it appears the feature is more closely imitating ReadItLater at the moment, which isn’t as feature-rich as Instapaper.

The news comes only a few days after Arment said that he will retire the free version of Instapaper on the iPhone and iPad, leaving only the $4.99 version on the App Store. Instapaper sales will definitely be threatened if Apple ends up making Reading List a way to synchronize pages to read across its devices.

This is how Apple describes the feature: “Reading List lets you collect webpages and links for you to read later. To add the current page to your Reading List, click Add Page. You can also Shift-click a link to quickly add it to the list. To hide and show Reading List, click the Reading List icon (eyeglasses) in the bookmarks bar.”

Game fundings and acquisitions rise 130 percent to $1.89B in 2010

Video game acquisitions and funding deals rose 130 percent to $1.89 billion in 2010, up from $819 million in 2009, according to market researcher IHS Screen Digest.

The number of fundings and acquisition deals combined was 210 during last year, up 36 percent from a year earlier, thanks to the disruption in the game business caused by the growth of online and social networking games. Our own count found that game fundings hit $1.05 billion raised across 91 deals in 2010, up 58 percent from $663.1 million across 115 deals a year earlier.

There were 123 fundings and 87 acquisitions during the year, IHS Screen Digest said. There were 20 to 24 acquisitions every quarter, double the rate of the year earlier.

The numbers cover funding and acquisitions activity in all areas of games except mobile. Oddly enough, that’s the most active area of the game business today, and Screen Digest says it tracks that market separately.

?Two key trends fueled the robust pace of funding and acquisitions in gaming during 2010,? said Steve Bailey, games analyst at IHS. ?First, it was driven by burgeoning activity in the fast-evolving sphere of online gaming, with particular emphasis on social network gaming. Second, movement in funding and acquisitions also has ramped up between Western markets and entities in Asia, centered likewise on the growth to be found in various aspects of online gaming.”

Companies in all regions are starting to go global, raising the likelihood of international deals. The total declared value of funding deals in social network games alone rose 300 percent in 2010.

The biggest funding event was when Chinese online gaming giant Tencent invested $300 million in Russia’s Digital Sky Technologies, which itself has invested in social game companies such as Zynga. Zynga raised $147 million from Japanese investor Softbank. But we noted the biggest funding of the year was Providence Equity Partners investing $150 million in ZeniMax, which acquired id Software, whose upcoming game Rage is pictured at top.

Royal wedding fever sweeps the web

Most of the world should have been asleep when the British royal wedding took place today, but the event still took over the entire Internet.

In the UK, mobile carrier O2 rolled out additional base stations to deal with the extra traffic. According to The Register, O2 expected an average of one call and four text messages for each of the 300,000 customers lining the streets and crowding in front of Buckingham Palace, and it expected that 65 million images of the event would appear on social networking sites.

Of course, this was dwarfed by the audience watching online.Yahoo told us thatby 11:00 AM this morning, Yahoo had already sent 14 million clicks to its Royal Wedding coverage and the top two stories (?the dress? and ?the kiss?) have driven more than 6 million clicks combined.Requests per second have surpassed previous records set by the Japan Earthquake (40k per second at today?s peak, compared to 33k per second).

Yahoo’s video traffic for the Royal wedding generated record traffic for a live video event on Yahoo, eclipsing the previous record set by the Michael Jackson funeral by 21 percent.Mashable also reports thatAkamai, which handles a significant portion of global web traffic, said the number of concurrent live streams on its servers surpassed the 1.6M peak set by the World Cup in June of 2010.

All of the top 10 Twitter trending topics during the event were related to the royal wedding from #sarahburton” (the designer of the wedding dress, a closely guarded secret prior to the event) to #casamentoreal (royal wedding in Spanish).

Finally, the wedding dress was a triumph, and David Beckham looked very handsome.

Total buys majority stake in solar panel manufacturer SunPower

Total, a French oil company, announced today that it will purchase a majority stake in solar panel manufacturer SunPower for $23.25 per share ? bringing Europe’s third-largest oil company into the growing and hyper-competitive solar panel business.

First Solar now stands alone as the last major independent manufacturer of solar panels in the United States. Solar panel manufacturers have faced stiff competition from Chinese companies that are able to compete with much lower costs, forcing U.S. companies to either seek large amounts of financing ? typically in the form of huge guaranteed loans from the Department of Energy ? or sell off to larger energy companies.

SunPower specialized in photovoltaic panels that were highly efficient, but a little more expensive than other solar panel manufacturers. Solar panels capture sunlight and convert it to electricity, but usually capture only small amounts of the sunlight that hits the panel. SunPower’s cells can capture around 24 percent of the light hitting the panel and convert it to electricity ? compared to FirstSolar’s 11 percent efficiency ratings. SunPower specializes in wafer-style solar panels, while FirstSolar and other major competitors produce thin-film solar panels that can be placed on any surface and have lower manufacturing costs.

That’s because most new solar power projects carry tremendous capital costs and take some time before they recoup their costs.SunPower also played that game ? the company purchased European photovoltaic plant company SunRay for $277 million in February last year. SunPower supplied 80,000 panels for SunRay installations in Europe and Israel covering 13,000 homes before it decided to purchase SunRay.

Total will buy 60 percent of SunPower for around $1.4 billion, valuing the company as being worth around $2.3 billion. SunPower currently has a market cap of around $1.45 billion ? so the deal represents a 58 percent premium over its current market price. Shares of SunPower were up around 40 percent to $22.15 in extended trading after the deal was announced.

Anyone Can Take Down Facebook Pages with a Fake Email Address

Something strange has been happening to several popular Facebook pages in recent weeks: they've disappeared. According to the affected page owners, they're victims of bogus DMCA claims. The DMCA, or Digital Millennium Copyright Act, is a piece of (arguably broken) legislation which allows copyright owners to protect their copyrighted works from infringement. Over the years, it's been used to remove content from Google's search index, from YouTube and Yahoo Video, and by entities like Major League Baseball, record labels, doctors who don't like bad reviews, software companies, and many, many others, in opposition to what most would claim is "fair use" of such content.

But while the DMCA has a long history of misuse, or perhaps, heavy-handed use, the law itself is not the main concern here with these Facebook pages' takedowns - it's Facebook's process for handling such complaints. Because the social network does not validate the identity of anyone submitting a DMCA takedown notice, nor does it check to see if the report was sent from a legitimate email address, anyone with an ax to grind can fill out a form with bogus information to see a Facebook Page disappear, sometimes for good.

Tech Blogs are Latest Victims

This has happened recently to several websites, including some which may be familiar to ReadWriteWeb readers: RedmondPie, Neowin and Ars Technica. We've come across others, too, like the Pakistan-based Rewriting Technology, for example, which proves that this is not just a U.S.-based problem. In many cases, the pages have been taken down multiple times.

Typically, the process for handling copyright infringement claims involves the copyright owner submitting a claim to the entity (in this case, Facebook) about the infringing content. The entity, removes the content immediately and informs the entity who had posted the content it had been removed and why. If this was a mistake, the person or organization who had posted the infringing content then has to contact the complaining party directly to resolve the issue. The hosting provider is not involved in resolving the dispute, and is protected by the safe harbor portion of the DMCA from being liable for having allowed the content to be uploaded in the first place.

This is Facebook's general process as well. On the form it provides here (https://www.facebook.com/legal/copyright.php?noncopyright_notice=1), the copyright holder has to provide their name, mailing address, telephone, email and details of the infringement.

Facebook Does Not Verify Identity of Submitter, Not Even the Email

However, what Facebook does not do is verify whether or not any of that contact information is accurate. While doing so may be an administrative burden the network could not afford, it does not even take the simple step of verifying the reporter's email address is valid.

Scam artists, as you may have guessed, have discovered this loophole. In one case, with Hamard Dar's Rewriting Technology site, the page went down for over a month. Dar says he was targeted for money. "He wanted me to pay him...to get the page back," he told us. Dar didn't go for that option, however, because there was no guarantee the scammer would return the page once paid. Instead, Dar ran his own personal investigation until he discovered the person involved and threatened him to withdraw the complaint, saying he would report him to U.S. cyber crime enforcement (the scam artist lives in Chicago). The page was then returned.

Damage to Brand Reputation

In RedmondPie's case, after its original Facebook page was disabled, leaving over 70,000 Facebook fans in the lurch, a new, fake RedmondPie Facebook page came online, promising its Facebook fans free iPads. Not only was this a loss on Redmond Pie's part, the resulting action greatly damaged the site's brand reputation.

Facebook's Statement

We asked Facebook about these situations and a spokesperson told us the company takes all IP claims seriously. It provided us with the following statement:

We want Facebook to be a place where people can share and discuss openly while respecting the rights of others. We take seriously both the interests of people who post content and those of rights holders. We work to ensure that we don't take content down as a result of fraudulent notices. However, when a rights holder properly completes our notice form alleging intellectual property (IP) infringement, we will take appropriate action including removing or disabling access to the relevant content. When we do this, we notify the person who shared the content so he or she can take appropriate action, which may include contacting the reporting party or following up with Facebook.

Submitting an IP notice is no trivial matter. The forms in our Help Center require statements under penalty of perjury, and fraudulent claims are subject to legal process.

Facebook Could Do More

But Facebook isn't doing enough to protect these victims, says Graham Cluley, a security research at Sophos, who has previous experience documenting Facebook scams. Facebook could set a higher bar for complainants to jump over, he said. For instance, they could confirm that the email address being used is "legitimate and contactable," he suggested. Facebook could do this easily simply by replying to the email, and requesting the complainant to click on a link to prove they really did sent the email, for example.

Facebook could also choose to insist that throwaway email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) cannot be used for these sorts of complaints - that a domain name associated with the brand which claims to being breached is used instead, says Cluley. Or it could even request these claims were sent in on headed letter paper via snail mail or fax.

Dirk Knop, a Technical Editor at security firm Avira, agreed with Cluley, saying, "reacting blindly without verifying whether the sender of the complaint even really exists and uses an existing email address is not how it should be done." He said Facebook needs to "react fast and correct this error."

That said, neither Cluley, Knop, nor two other researchers at security firms we contacted were aware of this sort of fake takedown notice being used in scams or for spamming purposes, nor was it known to be a common cybercrime trend.

No Recourse for Page Owners Without Lawyers

But Ars Technica, which is now the most recent victim, notes this problem has been around for some time. Last year, for example, sex blogger Violet Blue's Facebook page was taken down through similar fake claims.

To make matters worse, when the targeted individuals are public figures or small-time bloggers, without access to the legal counsel Facebook recommends they use to resolve the matter, they have almost no recourse in resolving the problem.

Here's what a typical Facebook response to an innocent victim suggests:

While we appreciate your concerns, as we hope you can understand, we are not in a position to adjudicate disputes between third parties. When we receive an allegation of infringement, or a suitable report of a violation of our Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, our procedures require that we take action appropriate to the report. If you believe these reports are not being made in good faith or are inaccurate, we suggest you or your legal counsel contact the complaining party to discuss this further. If the reporting party withdraws their complaint or you prevail in court, we would be happy to follow up about restoring the removed material.

But when the complaining party is a ghost, page restoration is difficult, if not impossible.

We've seen several of these form emails from Facebook, and they seem to be automated responses, or, at best, form letters, despite being signed with a "real" Facebook employee's name. In some cases, the form letter writer appears to have no knowledge of actions being taken by another Facebook employee, such as is the case when the victim "knows someone at Facebook" who is helping. This leads to even more confusion in what's already a complex situation.

How to Protect Yourself

For what it's worth, Dar says he found a workaround that allows legitimate page owners to protect themselves until Facebook's policy changes: submit a claim against yourself. Once it's taken down, ask Facebook for support in migrating your fans to a new page. When the migration is complete, you can use the new page safely. If anyone ever reports the page again, you can use your first complaint as proof that the page is yours. "I know it's crazy," he says. But it worked for him.

However, other sources say Facebook has stopped assisting in the migration of fans. There is no way for a page owner to manually migrate fans, either. In other words, this workaround may be iffy and ill-advised.

We asked Facebook why it didn't validate email addresses, but the spokesperson never responded to that question directly.

Blog Post: Chile DST 2011 Fallback Update

Disclaimer:  The information in this document is written in response to an announcement by the government of Chile about changes in the daylight saving time in Chile for the year of 2011.

The steps provided in this bulletin were created to mitigate the impacts that the daylight saving time changes will cause for customers in Chile. These are the impacts primarily anticipated at the time this document was written, and the effects that customers may face are not restricted to them.

The suggested actions on this document might receive additional testing. The information described in this document may change without notice.

In addition, customers should be aware that further guidance may be provided at any time by Microsoft.

Special notes: This document was revised in response to a change on the DST end date that was officially announced by the Chilean Government. We obtained this information from the following source: http://www.gob.cl/informa/2011/03/28/ministro-hinzpeter-anuncio-extension-de-horario-de-verano-en-el-pais.htm. We the official decree changing the DST dates in Chile was published by the government on the following site: http://www.horaoficial.cl/cambio.htm.

Chile DST 2011 Fallback

In response to the current Energy Crisis that i s impacting the country the Chilean government has announced a new end date for the DST period of 2010-2011. The new fallback information is the following:

End of the DST Period:

For the mainland and Chilean Antarctica the Daylight saving time ends: 24:00 of the first Saturday of May the clocks should go back to 23:00 of the same day. For the DST period of 2010-2011 the new End date is now May 7th, 2011.

For the Easter Island and Salas y Gmez Island the Daylight saving time ends: 22:00 of the first Saturday of May the clocks should go back to 21:00 of the same day. For the DST period of 2010-2011 the new End date is now May 7th, 2011.

Start of the DST Period:

For the mainland and Chilean Antarctica the Daylight saving time starts: 24:00 of the third Saturday of August the clocks should go forward to 01:00 of the next day. For the DST period of 2011-2012 the new Start date is now August 20th, 2011.

For the Easter Island and Salas y Gmez Island the Daylight saving time ends: 22:00 of the third Saturday of August the clocks should go forward to 23:00 of the same day. For the DST period of 2011-2012 the new Start date is now August 20th, 2011.

Since the new date published by the government is different from what was defined in the previous years, Windows-based computers will not correctly interpret the time that is related to the transition to daylight saving time.

In addition to Microsoft products, other software, OS releases and hardware (phones, routers, switches and managed devices) may require updates and/or changes.

Our teams at Microsoft have taken several steps to alert customers and partners about the changes in Chile.

Microsoft released a hotfix to update the Windows Operating Systems with the new fallback DST date for Chile. Before release a hotfix Microsoft needs to follow test procedures to minimize the possibility of any adverse effect.

This is a guide for those that followed our first recommendation (published before the release of the hotfix KB2543367) and changed the machine?s time zone to ?UTC-03:00 Cayenne, Fortaleza?. It describes the steps that need to be done to move the machines back to ?UTC-4:00 Santiago?.

After apply the fix users will have to adjust their Outlook calendars to reflect any changes related with time zone (hotfix or workarounds).

We will continue to publish advice and recommendations on the LATAM Team Blog at http://blogs.technet.com/latam and at http://www.microsoft.com/chile/cambiodehora/default.aspx.

General recommendations

  • Install the hotfix KB2543367 as soon as possible. This hotfix supersedes DST updates KB2443685 and KB2519231
  • This update DOES INCLUDE an update for the ?UTC-04:00 Santiago? and it contains recent changes on several time zones around the world.
  • Please note that if you adjust the machine?s clock manually, you may have adverse effects on your environment. This procedure is not supported by Microsoft.
  • Contact Microsoft Support prior to any modification if you are unsure about the steps to follow in order to be prepared for the Daylight Saving Time change in Chile.
  • Microsoft product teams follow a semi-annual DST and TZ update schedule, which follows the Windows regular schedule for publishing newly legislated DST rules and time zone updates. These annual Windows "Cumulative Daylight Saving Time and Time Zone Updates" are released in December for each calendar year; a semi-annual update will be released in August/September, as needed. Microsoft products that are affected may also schedule updates to accommodate some of these changes. Some times ?out-of-band? hotfixes are released to address important issues. The Microsoft Policy in Response to DST/TZ Requests can be found on the following article: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/dst_ms_response

Impacts for Outlook clients and Exchange

Calendar items created during the extended DST period (04/02/2011 and 05/07/2011) may show with one hour off. This may happen for both recurring and single-instance appointments.

The inconvenience experienced by Outlook client users happens for all appointments during the delta period that were created before the administrators update the DST dates on the operating system.

The appointments created after the DST dates have been updated on the operating system will have the correct time.

To learn more about how to address time zone changes in Outlook, go here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931667

Microsoft Outlook 2010

With Outlook 2010, you may not have to run either the client side or Exchange server tool to rebase your calendar. Outlook 2010 has built-in dynamic time zone recalculation functionality so meetings are displayed at the correct time on your calendar. However, if you also use an earlier version Outlook client or a mobile device to view your calendar, you may find the same meeting on your calendar is not displayed correctly because the underlying time zone information in the meeting is incorrect. Read more here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931667

Adjusting Outlook calendars for users in Chile after move the machines back to '(UTC -04:00) Santiago?

After you move to the time zone ?(UTC -04:00) Santiago", Outlook calendar items from Saturday, April 2nd, 2011 to Saturday, May 7th, 2011, may be displayed 1 hour off.

Options to correct your Outlook calendar in this scenario:

  • Manually modify each appointment created during the delta period after the operating system time zone has been changed. Instructions on the section ?How to manually modify Outlook Calendar items?

- or -

  • Customers may also opt to use the "Outlook Time Zone Data Update Tool version 3.0" on the mode Permanent Time Zone Move to correct the Outlook calendar items. This procedure is explained below.

Special note:
We recommend you to print your calendar before any changes are made, and then review the calendar items to make sure these items appear at the correct times. You can use this printed copy of the calendar items to verify that Outlook has been updated successfully.

Step by step procedure to use ?Outlook Time Zone Data Update Tool version 3.0? after a time zone move

The following describes the steps to be followed by end-users performing a time zone move:

  1. The steps below can be followed for users who changed their time zone configuration to ?(UTC -04:00) Santiago?.
  2. Download and run the installation package from:
    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=%20E343A233-B9C8-4652-9DD8-AE0F1AF62568&displaylang=en
  3. Go to Start, All Programs, Microsoft Office Outlook Tools, Time Zone Data Update Tool and Select "Permanent Time Zone Move Mode".
  4. Properly select ?(UTC -03:00) Cayenne, Fortaleza? from the ?Original Time Zone:? drop down, and ?(UTC -04:00) Santiago? for the ?New Time Zone:? drop down and click OK.
image

NOTE: As with standard time zone updates, the tool defaults to updating affected items on your Calendar and in your Reminders folder.  If you would like to update additional items (e.g. items in additional Calendars or a PST), you can do so by clicking the ?Custom?? button and manually selecting the target folder.

  5. The tool will inspect your mailbox and will report how many appointments will be moved:

image

If you click ?Details? the appointment list will appear and you will be able to select all (default) or some of the appointments. In a normal situation you will move all the appointments to the new time zone. Click ?OK? in the following dialog to proceed moving the appointments. A log file ?Outlook Time Zone Update .log? will be generated in the %temp% directory.

  6. Click "OK" to correct the calendar items listed.

  7. After the tool finishes updating the calendar items click Details to see if all items were updated:

image

  8. After moving Click ?OK? again to close the tool.

  9. On Outlook review your calendar items and verify if they were correctly updated.

How to manually modify Outlook Calendar items:

After you move from another time zone to ?(UTC -04:00) Santiago", your calendar items may be one hour off.

A simpler alternative to correct the Outlook Calendar items is by adjusting the appointments manually. To do so, please proceed as follows:

1. Start Outlook, and then open the Outlook calendar.

2. Manually move each meeting that you organized so that they occur at the correct time.

3. Send an update for each meeting that you moved to the meeting attendees. This action causes the calendar for each attendee to display the correct time for the meeting.

4. Manually move each single-instance appointment.

5. Manually move all recurring appointments that occur in the extended DST period.

Recommendations to minimize the impacts on Outlook/Exchange:

  • Simulate the changes on a lab environment, so you know what will happen and what to expect.
  • Work in conjunction with the operating system team to update the DST dates as soon as possible to minimize the chance of users creating new appointments during the delta period before the operating system DST dates get updated.
  • Before doing any change on the DST information, request the users to print their schedule so they have a reference to follow in order to manually update the appointments later if needed.
  • Take a full online backup of your Exchange Servers in case you decide to use the Exchange Calendar Update Tool.
  • For the meetings with multiple attendees only the meeting requestor should update the time and send the update to the others.
  • Include the time of the meeting in the e-mail request so that invitees can double check the correct meeting time (such as, "Project brainstorming - 11:00 A.M. Santiago Time").
  • Exercise caution with the appointments and meetings in the extended DST period. When in doubt, verify the correct time with the organizer.

Angry Birds hits 140M downloads, poised for growth in China

Rovio’s Angry Birds mobile game has been downloaded more than 140 million times since its release 16 months ago.

The game maker said it has seen a major surge from the 100 million units it reported in March, which means that the title is climbing higher in the ranks of the best-selling games of all time.

In March, Rovio released the Angry Birds Rio version of the game, with new levels and characters related to the animated film Rio.The game sells for 99 cents in Apple’s App Store, but the download number also includes free versions as well, so there isn’t a good way to tell how much the private company has generated from the title.

Peter Vesterbacka, head of Rovio, disclosed the new download number at the Global Mobile Internet Conference in Beijing. Angry Birds is now available on Android, Windows, and video game systems such as the PlayStation Network (if it actually comes back, that is). Vesterbacka said that Rovio wants to hit 100 million downloads in China this year alone. The title has competition from other popular apps such as the Talking Friends apps from Outfit7, which has also seen 100 million downloads.

Apple Finally Responds to iPhone Location Tracking Issue

It's been a week since data scientists Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden published their discovery that the iPhone has been keeping track of users' locations and storing the data - unencrypted - on the phone as well as any machine with which you sync the device.

Although the news spread like wildfire, Apple has remained silent until now. The company has finally issued a statement on its collection and use of location data. We've reprinted the press release in full below.

Apple insists it is not tracking the location of your iPhone. "Apple has never done so and has no plans to ever do so." It maintains that what Warden and Allan found was a database of Wi-Fi hotspots and celltowers around your current location, information that will help your iPhone quickly calculate your location when requested.

Sponsor

tracker_sm.jpgDespite insisting that it's innocent of any accusations of tracking users, Apple says it plans to issue a software update soon that will change how much data is stored (just seven days' worth, which will be encrypted), will end caching this data when the device is synced, and will actually cease if users turn off location services.

In the end, Apple seems to be agreeing with what we first thought of the consolidated.db file: more negligence than nefariousness.

Apple would like to respond to the questions we have recently received about the gathering and use of location information by our devices.

1. Why is Apple tracking the location of my iPhone?
Apple is not tracking the location of your iPhone. Apple has never done so and has no plans to ever do so.

2. Then why is everyone so concerned about this?
Providing mobile users with fast and accurate location information while preserving their security and privacy has raised some very complex technical issues which are hard to communicate in a soundbite. Users are confused, partly because the creators of this new technology (including Apple) have not provided enough education about these issues to date.

3. Why is my iPhone logging my location?
The iPhone is not logging your location. Rather, it's maintaining a database of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers around your current location, some of which may be located more than one hundred miles away from your iPhone, to help your iPhone rapidly and accurately calculate its location when requested. Calculating a phone's location using just GPS satellite data can take up to several minutes. iPhone can reduce this time to just a few seconds by using Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data to quickly find GPS satellites, and even triangulate its location using just Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data when GPS is not available (such as indoors or in basements). These calculations are performed live on the iPhone using a crowd-sourced database of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data that is generated by tens of millions of iPhones sending the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers in an anonymous and encrypted form to Apple.

4. Is this crowd-sourced database stored on the iPhone?
The entire crowd-sourced database is too big to store on an iPhone, so we download an appropriate subset (cache) onto each iPhone. This cache is protected but not encrypted, and is backed up in iTunes whenever you back up your iPhone. The backup is encrypted or not, depending on the user settings in iTunes. The location data that researchers are seeing on the iPhone is not the past or present location of the iPhone, but rather the locations of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers surrounding the iPhone's location, which can be more than one hundred miles away from the iPhone. We plan to cease backing up this cache in a software update coming soon (see Software Update section below).

5. Can Apple locate me based on my geo-tagged Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data?
No. This data is sent to Apple in an anonymous and encrypted form. Apple cannot identify the source of this data.

6. People have identified up to a year's worth of location data being stored on the iPhone. Why does my iPhone need so much data in order to assist it in finding my location today?
This data is not the iPhone's location data--it is a subset (cache) of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database which is downloaded from Apple into the iPhone to assist the iPhone in rapidly and accurately calculating location. The reason the iPhone stores so much data is a bug we uncovered and plan to fix shortly (see Software Update section below). We don't think the iPhone needs to store more than seven days of this data.

7. When I turn off Location Services, why does my iPhone sometimes continue updating its Wi-Fi and cell tower data from Apple's crowd-sourced database?
It shouldn't. This is a bug, which we plan to fix shortly (see Software Update section below).

8. What other location data is Apple collecting from the iPhone besides crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower data?
Apple is now collecting anonymous traffic data to build a crowd-sourced traffic database with the goal of providing iPhone users an improved traffic service in the next couple of years.

9. Does Apple currently provide any data collected from iPhones to third parties?
We provide anonymous crash logs from users that have opted in to third-party developers to help them debug their apps. Our iAds advertising system can use location as a factor in targeting ads. Location is not shared with any third party or ad unless the user explicitly approves giving the current location to the current ad (for example, to request the ad locate the Target store nearest them).

10. Does Apple believe that personal information security and privacy are important?
Yes, we strongly do. For example, iPhone was the first to ask users to give their permission for each and every app that wanted to use location. Apple will continue to be one of the leaders in strengthening personal information security and privacy.

Software Update
Sometime in the next few weeks Apple will release a free iOS software update that:

  • reduces the size of the crowd-sourced Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower database cached on the iPhone
  • ceases backing up this cache, and
  • deletes this cache entirely when Location Services is turned off.

In the next major iOS software release the cache will also be encrypted on the iPhone.
